Last week, prosecutors filed 29 criminal counts against Phillip and Nancy Garrido in connection with the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard; you can read the complaint here. One interesting aspect of the complaint is the timeline of alleged assaults, listed in the complaint as taking place between June 1991 and December 1997, which may follow information prosecutors gathered from Jaycee, or just their early best guess about a timeline. Another interesting aspect is that Nancy is charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault as well.
As I discussed with Alex Witt Sunday, though, this complaint is just the beginning of the criminal process of trying the Garridos for their alleged involvement in this heinous series of crimes. It's likely that prosecutors are waiting for their chance to talk to Jaycee and her daughters; after those interviews, they may well amend their complaint to include more charges against the couple.
The next court date in the case is September 14, for a bail hearing. Nancy Garrido's lawyer, Gilbert Maines, told Meredith Vieira today that he believes his client is competent to stand trial; he thinks his plan will be to have her evaluated, though. He has heard about personal threats stemming from his representation of her and says he is trying to ignore them.
